Description
Valenciso Rioja Reserva is the estate's flagship, an organically grown old-vine Tempranillo raised in barrel and then settled in concrete for a further two years.
The fruit is handpicked Tempranillo from 17 organically managed plots on the clay and limestone soils around Ollauri, spread across the villages of Villalba, Gimileo, Rodezno, Briones and Haro, all within five kilometres of the winery. These sites lie in what has been proposed as the Western Sonsierra zone and sit at the heart of Rioja's late nineteenth-century grower tradition. The vines in this cuvée are no less than 60 years old, on limestone soils at altitudes up to 600 metres. Fermentation is natural in concrete vats, after which the wine spends 18 months in mostly low-toast Radoux French oak barriques, with around 10 per cent in recent years raised in low-toast Caucasus oak to soften the wood influence further. It then returns to cool concrete to settle for 24 months, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Ready on release but with a decade or more ahead of it; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, grilled beef or a plate of jamón and aged Manchego.
