A three-bottle vertical of Valenciso's Rioja Reserva, including a release that has not previously been shipped to Australia.

Valenciso was founded at Ollauri in Rioja Alta by Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso, and the Reserva is its emblematic wine, made entirely from handpicked Tempranillo grown on the clay and limestone soils around Haro. Fruit comes from seventeen plots spread across Villalba, Rodezno, Briones and Ollauri, all farmed under organic guidelines and cropped well below the regional limits; the youngest vines that make the grade are sixty years old. The house style favours restraint, with fermentation in cement, moderate use of low-toast French oak and long settling in concrete before release, so the wine arrives with bottle age already behind it. A pack of three releases spanning two decades shows how the wine develops in the cellar, which is difficult to judge from any single bottle.

The older releases are ready now; the youngest will reward further keeping. Serve with roast lamb, game or aged Manchego at 16-18°C.
