Description

Valli Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir is a generous, darker-fruited expression of Bannockburn from one of New Zealand's leading Pinot specialists.

Grant Taylor made his name as one of the first serious Pinot Noir winemakers in Central Otago before founding Valli in the late 1990s. Today he and winemaker Jen Parr craft a set of single-vineyard wines that let drinkers compare the region's subregions side by side. The Bannockburn site lies in the Cromwell Basin, where hot, dry summers ripen Pinot fully. The 2023 shows blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry, threaded with wild thyme, evergreen, lily and jasmine, on a buoyant palate with dried herb spice, fine but generous tannins and a tangy finish.

Enjoy it at around 16 degrees now with seared lamb backstrap or mushroom pappardelle, or lay it down: the winemaker expects it to develop for 20 years or so.
