Valli Vineyards Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023

Valli Vineyards Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir is a dark-fruited, finely structured single-vineyard Pinot from the warm Bendigo subregion of Central Otago.

Grant Taylor spent many years making wine in Central Otago before setting up Valli, and he and winemaker Jen Parr now make a series of wines that compare individual vineyards across the region. Bendigo, above the eastern shore of Lake Dunstan, is hot and dry, but the higher slopes that supply this wine keep acidity fresh and give the fruit tension. The 2023 is generous yet restrained: dark cherry, plum and blackberry with floral and herbal notes, a hint of dark chocolate, tightly woven spice and ripe, mouth-coating tannins.

A wine to drink now or keep, with an expected life of 20 years or more. When serving, aim for about 16 degrees, and try it with venison, slow-cooked lamb or a rich mushroom ragù.
