Valli Vineyards "The Real McCoy" Orange Wine 2023

Valli Vineyards "The Real McCoy" Orange Wine is a skin-contact Pinot Gris with fine tannin, texture and real versatility at the table.

Orange wine is made from white grapes fermented on their skins, much like a red, and Valli applies that approach to Pinot Gris. The skins, together with semi-oxidative handling, give the wine its colour, which in 2023 is a pale peach. The Valli team of Grant Taylor and winemaker Jen Parr is best known for single-vineyard Otago Pinot Noir and brings the same attention to site and texture to this white. Apricot, peach, lychee and orange peel mingle with wild sage and white blossom, and the palate is precise and silky, with stone fruit, tangy citrus, subtle spice, fine tannin and lingering acidity.

Serve lightly chilled, around 10 to 12 degrees, so the texture shows. It pairs well with spiced dishes, pork belly, Middle Eastern mezze or aged hard cheeses. Slow to evolve, it can be cellared for many years; the winemaker plans to keep her own bottles for 15 or more.
