Description

Valli Vineyards "The Real McCoy" Orange Wine is an expressive, tangerine-hued Pinot Gris made in a skin-contact style.

Pinot Gris has pinkish-grey skins, and by fermenting the juice on those skins and handling it semi-oxidatively, Valli draws out colour, grip and aromatic depth. The 2024 has a striking tangerine hue to match its outgoing personality. Valli is the Otago label founded by Pinot Noir pioneer Grant Taylor, with the wines now made alongside Jen Parr. Sweet pea flowers, tangerine, apricot and pineapple meet rosemary and sage on the nose, and the palate is focused and precise, with tangy citrus, stone fruit, subtle spice and fine tension between tannin and acidity.

Try it slightly cool with roast chicken and preserved lemon, a Moroccan tagine, charcuterie or a washed-rind cheese. It ages slowly and gracefully, and the winemaker is tipping around 20 years in the cellar.
