Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon is a polished, powerful Margaret River red from the estate that planted the region's first commercial vineyard.

Dr Tom Cullity put the first vines in the ground at Wilyabrup in 1967, and Cabernet has been at the heart of the estate ever since. The Holmes à Court family has owned the winery since 1987, and chief winemaker Virginia Willcock steers a style built on ripe fruit, fine tannin and restraint. A little Malbec is blended in to add perfume and a plush middle, while maturation in French oak gives a polished frame without covering the fruit. The result is deep blackberry, cassis and mulberry with savoury, earthy edges, a rich and creamy front palate, fresh acidity and firm, dry tannins.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. Decant for an hour if opening it young, and pair it with a chargrilled scotch fillet, lamb rack with rosemary or aged cheddar. Well cellared, it should keep improving for many years.
