Description
Verget Bourgogne Terres de Pierres blends two of the better Mâconnais terroirs but is deliberately declassified to the regional appellation.
The wine is a blend of Mâcon-Charnay and Viré-Clessé, two of the more highly regarded names of the Mâconnais. Verget's view is that these particular lots do not taste especially Mâconnais in style, being fuller and more structured than the region's usual register, so the blend is bottled as plain Bourgogne rather than under either village name. Verget is the négociant house established by Jean-Marie Guffens at Sologny, buying fruit from long-standing grower relationships across southern Burgundy. All the component wines were vinified in mature oak, with no new barrels, and the lees were left unstirred so as not to mask the natural freshness of the wine. The result is a step up in weight and power from the house's Mâcon-Villages bottling.
Drinking well on release and worth keeping three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled fish or a hard sheep's cheese.
