Verget Mâcon-Bussières Vignes de Montbrison 2023

Verget Mâcon-Bussières Vignes de Montbrison comes from one of the oldest plots in a vineyard sitting directly below the Roche de Vergisson.

Bussières lies in the southern Mâconnais, in the country of limestone escarpments that culminates in the rocks of Vergisson and Solutré. The Montbrison vineyard occupies a gentle south-west facing slope where the soil is shallow clay and limestone with a great deal of stone. Verget is the négociant house founded by Jean-Marie Guffens, a Belgian who arrived in the Mâconnais in the late 1970s and spent the following decades demonstrating what the region could do at the top end. The fruit here comes from vines of more than forty years. Only free-run juice is used and fermentation takes place entirely in wood, with 25 per cent new oak. Guffens is on record saying no wine is over-oaked, only under-fruited, and the seasoning here is measured accordingly. It would not look out of place among more expensive bottles from the Côte d'Or.

Drinking well now and worth four to six years in the cellar. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled scallops or a creamy pasta.
