Verget Mâcon-Charnay Clos Saint-Pierre 2022

Verget Mâcon-Charnay Clos Saint-Pierre is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from a limestone clos on the south-facing slopes of the Mont du Mâconnais.

Mâcon-Charnay is one of the named village appellations of the Mâconnais, the broad band of limestone country running south from Tournus towards Pouilly-Fuissé, and it has long been a source of Chardonnay with more grip than the generic Mâcon-Villages bottlings. Maison Verget is the négociant house established by the Belgian-born Jean-Marie Guffens, who built its reputation on tightly written contracts with growers, early picking and a reductive, low-intervention cellar. Clos Saint-Pierre sits on those south-facing slopes where the soils vary from parcel to parcel but limestone is prevalent throughout. The fruit was harvested in the last week of August and the free-run juice fermented in used barrels, running through until the end of November. Maturation followed in used oak for eight months, with no new wood to cover the site. The result is dense and layered, with fleshy white fruit, red apple and a biscuity, leesy edge carrying a long finish that stays clear of heaviness.

Approachable now and worth holding three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a soft washed-rind cheese.
