Description
Clos Saint-Pierre lies on the south-facing slopes of the Mont du Mâconnais at Charnay, and is bottled by Verget as a single-vineyard Mâcon.
Charnay-lès-Mâcon sits just west of the town of Mâcon, on varied soils in which limestone predominates, and its south-facing slopes ripen early. Verget is the négociant house founded by Jean-Marie Guffens in 1990, buying fruit from growers across the Mâconnais and Côte de Beaune and handling it with the care of a domaine. Here the grapes were harvested in the last week of August, and the free-run juice fermented in stainless steel tanks until the end of November, followed by eight months' maturation in tank. There is no oak involved, so the wine's density comes from the fruit and the lees. It is one of the more openly appealing wines in the range, layered with white fruit and red apple and finishing long without heaviness.
Drink now and over the next four years, with roast chicken, grilled fish or a soft cheese, at 10 to 12°C.
