Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos 2024

Mâcon-Pierreclos is a hillside village in the southern Mâconnais, and this is the Verget négociant bottling from old vines at the top of the slope.

Pierreclos lies at the crossroads between the Mâconnais and Beaujolais and owes much of its reputation to Jean-Marie Guffens, whose Guffens-Heynen wines from the Le Chavigne lieu-dit made the case that the village could match the Côte de Beaune for intensity. Verget is the négociant house Guffens founded in 1990, buying fruit rather than must and handling it as a domaine would. This cuvée comes from low-yielding vines more than 50 years old, planted on particularly rich limestone at the top of the hillside. It is made exclusively from first pressings and matured for eight months in foudre, which gives an even, unhurried texture. There is a touch of struck-match reduction adding complexity to the citrus peel and poached pear fruit.

Drink now to six years, with roast chicken, grilled fish or soft cheeses, at 10 to 12°C.
