Description
Verget Mâcon Villages Terres de Pierres is made entirely without oak, matured on fine lees in horizontal stainless-steel tanks.
Maison Verget was founded by Jean-Marie Guffens as a négociant specialising in white Burgundy, with a particular strength in the Mâconnais, where the house is based at Sologny. Terres de Pierres, meaning stony ground, is assembled from sources around the communes of Viré-Clessé and Charnay on the region's classic argilo-calcaire soils, with a further twenty per cent from the shallow, stony terroirs of Pierreclos, Vergisson and Bussières, which brings a chalky spine to the blend. The wine is made mostly from free-run juice, then fermented and matured for four months on fine lees without bâtonnage in horizontal stainless-steel tanks, a shape chosen to maximise contact between wine and lees. No wood is used at any stage. The style that results is supple and athletic rather than rich, with limestone drive and a length unusual at the Mâcon-Villages price.
Ready on release and good drinking for three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, chicken salad or a fresh goat's cheese.
