Verget Mâcon-Villages Vallons de Lamartine 2020

Verget Mâcon-Villages Vallons de Lamartine is a four-village blend from the southern Mâconnais, raised in used oak on its lees.

The valley of Lamartine takes its name from Alphonse de Lamartine, the poet and statesman born at Mâcon. Verget is the négociant house founded by Jean-Marie Guffens, working from Sologny and buying fruit from growers across the Mâconnais to vinify in its own cellars. This bottling blends Viré at 40 per cent with Pierreclos, Bussières and Vergisson at 20 per cent each, spreading the wine across the limestone hills at the southern end of the region. Everything is vinified in used oak barrels, and the wine spends 12 months on lees, a longer élevage than is usual at this level and one intended to draw out the salinity of the rocky soils rather than add wood flavour. The result has more Burgundian breadth than the Mâcon-Villages label normally suggests.

Drink now and over the next three to four years. Serve at 11-12°C with roast chicken, a pork terrine or gruyère.
