Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Le Haut de la Roche 2024

Le Haut de la Roche sits on the Roche de Vergisson at 400 metres, an altitude that alone kept it out of Pouilly-Fuissé's new Premier Cru classification.

Pouilly-Fuissé is the senior appellation of the Mâconnais, and in 2020 it gained its first Premiers Crus. This vineyard, on the limestone crag above Vergisson, missed out solely on the grounds of its elevation, though with a south-easterly exposure and a stony limestone base Jean-Marie Guffens of Maison Verget regards it as more deserving than several sites that were promoted — a view that carries weight as growing seasons warm and buyers look for fresher wines with lower alcohol. The fruit was harvested at the very end of the vintage, and low yields produced a compact core of fruit with a spine of ripe minerality. The wine was vinified entirely in oak with 25 per cent new barrels, giving intensity and length, a silky texture and a long, palate-scraping finish.

Good on release and rewarding five to ten years. Serve at 10 to 12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a rich fish pie.
