Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Les Combes Vieilles Vignes 2021

Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Les Combes Vieilles Vignes includes fruit from vines planted in 1917 and is one of the few Verget wines fermented entirely in barrel.

Pouilly-Fuissé is the leading white appellation of the Mâconnais, and Les Combes sits at the bottom of the Pouilly-Fuissé village. It is one of Jean-Marie Guffens' favourite vineyards, a preference that makes sense once the wine is in the glass. The oldest vines here were planted in 1917 and face north, while two younger parcels, from 1937 and 1953, face south. Each was picked and vinified separately before blending, and Guffens maintains the whole is considerably greater than the sum of its parts. The soils are clay and limestone with a higher proportion of clay than is usual in the area, which is why this is one of the few wines in the Verget range to be fermented entirely in oak barrels rather than partly in tank.

Drinking well now with five to eight years ahead; serve at 11–12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a mushroom and cream sauce.
