Description
Verget's Pouilly-Fuissé Les Combes Vieilles Vignes draws on two parcels in Solutré-Pouilly, the oldest of them planted in 1915.
Les Combes lies in Solutré-Pouilly and is one of Jean-Marie Guffens's favourite vineyards. The oldest vines, planted in 1915, face north; a second block of merely 70-year-old vines faces south. Each is picked and vinified separately before blending, and Guffens maintains the whole is well beyond the sum of its parts. The soils are clay and limestone with a higher share of clay than most sites in this part of the Mâconnais, which brings power, and this is one of the few Verget wines fermented entirely in oak barrels, though only 25 per cent are new and the wine spends just seven months in cask before settling in tank. In 2022 the low-lying parcel was picked early to hold acidity, and a smaller proportion of the riper south-facing fruit was used to keep structure and freshness. It is dense and powerful without losing its line, with fleshy orchard fruit, citrus oil and a flinty, smoky edge.
It needs a year or two to knit and should hold for a decade. Serve with roast chicken, scallops or a creamy fish pie at 10–12°C.
