Description
Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape-Blanc is a white from the southern Rhône, grown on the same celebrated plateau as the estate's red.
White Châteauneuf-du-Pape accounts for only a small fraction of the appellation's output, and Vieux Télégraphe's is among the most respected examples. Clairette and Grenache Blanc form the core of the blend, with Roussanne and Bourboulenc in support, all grown on La Crau, the pebble strewn plateau on the eastern side of the commune that the Brunier family has farmed since 1891. Vinification is deliberately restrained: gentle pressing, fermentation largely in tank with a portion in older oak, and minimal handling thereafter, so that the natural freshness the warm Rhône summer can otherwise blunt is preserved.
Serve at around 12 degrees with roast chicken, grilled fish or richer shellfish dishes; the wine drinks well young but often closes up for a few years before opening out again with age.
