Vieux Télégraphe Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023

Vieux Télégraphe Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the Brunier family's second red from the appellation, built from younger vines and parcels beyond the La Crau plateau.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is named for the Chappe optical telegraph relay that once stood on La Crau, the stony plateau in the south-east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape above Bédarrides, where the Brunier family has farmed since 1891. Télégramme began as a way of setting aside the younger plantings and outlying parcels, and has become a wine in its own right, drawing on Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The vineyards sit on galets roulés and sandier soils, and the wine is fermented traditionally and raised largely in older wood, so the emphasis falls on the fruit and the site rather than the barrel.

Good with roast lamb, grilled sausages, ratatouille or a mushroom risotto; serve at around 16 degrees. It is approachable earlier than the flagship, though it will hold for several years.
