Description
Viña Ventisquero Vertice Syrah Carménère is a premium Apalta red made in partnership with former Penfolds Grange winemaker John Duval.
Apalta is a horseshoe-shaped pocket of hillside vineyards within the Colchagua Valley, widely seen as one of Chile's top red wine sites. Its slopes face the sun, the soils are poor and well drained, and the surrounding hills shelter the vines from the hottest afternoon winds, giving small crops of deeply coloured, concentrated grapes. The fruit for this wine comes from the highest part of the estate's Roblería vineyard. Australian winemaker John Duval, who spent nearly three decades at Penfolds, works on the wine alongside Ventisquero's chief winemaker Felipe Tosso. Their aim is a blend where Carménère brings its dark fruit and savoury herbal notes and Syrah adds structure, spice and length.
Decant for an hour if opening young, and serve at around 17 to 18 degrees. It pairs well with slow-cooked beef, chargrilled lamb, game or hard aged cheeses. Expect it to develop nicely with five to ten years in a good cellar.
