Vincent Dancer Pommard les Perrières 2017

Vincent Dancer Pommard les Perrières is a Côte de Beaune red from a stony climat, made at a small Chassagne-Montrachet domaine better known for its whites.

Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay, planted to Pinot Noir alone on clay and limestone carrying a good deal of iron, which is why the village has a reputation for structure and darker fruit. Les Perrières, as the name suggests, is a rocky parcel where thin topsoil over stone keeps yields modest. Vincent Dancer, who did not come from Burgundy, set up in Chassagne-Montrachet in 1996 on family vines and works around five to six hectares across Chassagne, Meursault, Puligny, Beaune and Pommard; his holding here runs to just under a hectare. The vineyards have been certified organic since the early 2010s, with biodynamic practice added more recently. The reds are fully destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised about twelve months in used barrels with no new oak, then bottled without fining or filtration. His son Théo joined in 2016 and took charge in 2021.

Give it three to five years and expect it to hold well beyond a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with duck breast, coq au vin or a mushroom tart.
