Vincent Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne Rouge 2015

The domaine's regional Pinot Noir, made at Rully with the same handling Vincent Dureuil-Janthial gives his village wines.

Bourgogne Rouge is the broadest of Burgundy's appellations, and its quality rests almost entirely on who makes it. Dureuil-Janthial works from Rully at the northern edge of the Côte Chalonnaise, where the family has grown vines for generations; Vincent took over from his father Raymond in 1994 and farms around seventeen to twenty hectares with his wife Céline, organically in practice though the certification was lost in 2016 after a disastrous season. Fruit is picked by hand and sorted, then fully destemmed and given a cold maceration before fermenting on indigenous yeasts in open vats. Ageing is in barrel, almost all of it used, followed by a few months in tank, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphur. Cellar work at the domaine is timed to the lunar calendar, and the cellars are deep and cold, which slows fermentation.

Made for early drinking, and none the worse for a slight chill. Serve at 14–16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart.
