Vins de la Madone Côtes du Forez Mémoire de Madone 2020

Vins de la Madone Mémoire de Madone is a Gamay grown on volcanic basalt near the source of the Loire.

The Côtes du Forez lies on an ancient fault line in the Massif Central, at the upper end of the Loire and a long way from the appellations most drinkers associate with the river. Gamay does well in the volcanic soils here, and it was that potential Gilles Bonnefoy saw when he set up his estate in the mid-1990s. He now farms eight hectares of hillside vineyards, converted to organic growing in 2001 and to biodynamics in 2009. Mémoire de Madone comes from the estate's oldest plots, fifty-year-old Gamay rooted in basalt, cropped at yields as low as 25 hl/ha. The result is a good deal more structured than the light Gamay the region is often assumed to produce, without losing the lift the volcanic soils give it.

Drinking well now and over the next five years, with a light chill if preferred. Good with charcuterie, roast pork or mushrooms on toast. Serve at 16°C.
