Description
Vins de la Madone Les Rougeots du Clos is made from red-fleshed teinturier Gamay variants that the local appellation rules do not permit.
Les Rougeots du Clos is a single hectare at 600 metres in the Monts du Forez, in the upper Loire above Saint-Étienne, co-planted to three red-fleshed varieties. Two are the old teinturier variants Gamay de Bouze and Gamay de Chaudenay, thought to have been brought here by Benedictine monks and now close to extinct outside the Forez. The third is Gamaret, a Gamay Noir and Reichensteiner crossing bred in Switzerland in 1970, which Gilles Bonnefoy keeps for its dark fruit. None is allowed within the Côtes du Forez appellation, so the wine is bottled as IGP d'Urfé. The soil is migmatite granite, the signature rock around Montbrison. As a young-vine cuvée it is made without stems, wild-fermented and raised in stainless steel, and bottled with no added sulphur.
Drink young, over the next two years, and serve lightly chilled at 14-15°C with saucisson, a baguette and brie, or grilled vegetables.
