Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2024

Voliero Rosso di Montalcino is a Sangiovese made for early drinking, from Andrea Cortonesi's second property in Montalcino.

Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the south-eastern side of the zone, is home ground: it is where Cortonesi built his name at Uccelliera, and this separate label sits beside that work. Small crops, wild yeasts and a preference for clear fruit over heavy extraction run through both. The grapes are the same Sangiovese Grosso that goes into the senior wine, taken from younger plantings and parcels meant to be drunk sooner, with less ageing demanded before release; fermentation happens on skins in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by roughly a year in big casks and used barriques. Vineyard work here is sustainable.

Juicy and open, with sour cherry and a herbal edge finishing dry. It is ready now, so pour it a touch cool at 15-17°C with pasta al ragù, salumi, pizza or roast chicken.
