Von Buhl Forster Riesling 2016

Von Buhl Forster Riesling is a village-level Pfalz Riesling drawn from declassified fruit off the estate's Grosse Lage sites in Forst.

Forst is the most prestigious wine village of the Pfalz, and its reputation rests on basalt: a long-quarried outcrop whose dark, heat-retaining stone was historically spread across the vineyards and still shapes the wines. Reichsrat von Buhl, based at Deidesheim, is one of the region's historic estates and holds parcels in the leading Forst sites. First introduced in 2013, this bottling sets out to show the character of the village rather than of any one vineyard, and each year it is based on declassified fruit from one or more of the estate's Grosse Lage holdings; here the backbone comes from Ungeheuer, with barrels from Pechstein and Jesuitengarten, all classified sites entitled to produce Grosses Gewächs. The basalt-rich soils and low yields give a Riesling with considerably more structure and mineral intensity than the entry-level QbA. It was fermented in large wooden Doppelstück casks and in tank, then held seven months on full lees.

It will drink well over the next five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, smoked trout or a plate of charcuterie.
