Von Buhl Grosses Gewächs Pechstein Riesling 2016

Pechstein is one of the great basalt sites of the Pfalz, and this is Von Buhl's dry Grosses Gewächs from it.

The name comes from the German for pitchstone, the black basalt rock that dominates the vineyard's soil at Forst. Those rocks are the legacy of the Pechsteinkopf volcano, and they give the wines from the site an unmistakable precision and intensity along with a spicy, smoky, iodine character. Two other quirks matter here: a higher-than-average proportion of clay for Forst, which helps the vineyard retain water through dry summers, and a two-metre layer of limestone that the roots of the oldest vines penetrate. Reichsrat von Buhl is the largest holder in the site, farming some five hectares out of seventeen. Grosses Gewächs is the VDP's designation for a dry wine from a top classified vineyard, and Von Buhl's is naturally fermented and given extended lees ageing before bottling.

Best given four or five years and good for fifteen. Serve at 10–12°C with roast turbot, veal or a rich seafood chowder.
