Von Buhl Pfalz Riesling 1.5L MAGNUM 2018

This magnum of Von Buhl's dry Pfalz Riesling comes from the estate's certified organic sandstone vineyards around Deidesheim, Forst and Ruppertsberg.

Reichsrat von Buhl is one of the historic estates of the Mittelhaardt, and this is its entry-level dry Riesling, drawn in the main from the villages named above with some fruit from two smaller parcels immediately to the east at Niederkirchen and Friedelsheim. All the estate vineyards are farmed organically and certified. Weathered sandstone dominates the soils, which suits Riesling: it drains freely and gives wines with a clear, stony line. Fermentation is natural and largely in tank, with some parcels worked in the estate's oval Doppelstück oak casks. The current regime includes six months of ageing on gross lees, no pumping and very low sulphur additions even at this level, and the estate dropped around thirty per cent of its crop in early July to keep concentration in the fruit that remained.

The magnum format will hold it well; drink over the next five to eight years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork belly, grilled prawns or a mild curry.
