Von Buhl Pfalz Riesling 2018

The dry estate Riesling of Reichsrat von Buhl, a Deidesheim house founded in 1849 and farming organically since 2009.

The Pfalz runs north to south along the eastern edge of the Haardt hills in one of Germany's warmer and drier corners, which gives Riesling more flesh and breadth than the Mosel does. Franz Peter Buhl founded the property at Deidesheim in 1849, and the title Reichsrat was added to the name in 1912 after Franz Armand Buhl received it from Bavaria. The estate is now owned by the Niederberger family and is a VDP member, with around 56 hectares, predominantly Riesling, in Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg, including Forster Kirchenstück, Ungeheuer and Pechstein. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2009, with biodynamic practice increasing. From 2013 the cellar was reshaped by Mathieu Kauffmann, previously of Champagne Bollinger, around spontaneous fermentation, long lees contact and minimal intervention, and the estate Riesling is assembled from the village vineyards and finished dry.

Drink now and over the next five years. Serve at 10-12°C with sashimi, pork schnitzel or a Vietnamese-style herb salad.
