Voyager Estate Block 6 Broadvale Chardonnay 2019

Voyager Estate Block 6 Broadvale Chardonnay is a single-block Margaret River Chardonnay from a gravelly rise at Broadvale.

Just over a hectare of clone 95, planted in 2004 at 2300 vines to the hectare on the crown of a low rise that tilts slightly to the east. The ground is extremely gravelly with a high granite content over a stony clay base about a metre down, and it delivers Chardonnay at low baume with acidity to match. Whole bunches went to press and then to tank before moving into French oak barriques for a natural ferment; malolactic conversion is necessary here to temper that acid and build texture. Ten months in barrel followed. Alongside the Block 5 wine, made identically, this is the leaner and more linear of the pair.

Acacia and preserved lemon, then a crystalline, racy palate with a long mineral finish. Serve at 12 degrees. Oysters, marron or a plate of ceviche; treat it as you would a Puligny and keep the sauces light.
