Voyager Estate Cabernets 2023

Voyager Estate Cabernets is an organically grown Margaret River red blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon.

Five varieties go in: Cabernet Sauvignon at 54 per cent, Merlot at 37, then small amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The backbone comes from three organically farmed Cabernet blocks on gravelly soil, planted to two clones, Houghton for darker fruit and 125 for perfume and a lighter, finer structure. Merlot fills the mid-palate; the rest add depth and aromatics. Picking ran from 29 March to 12 April, each parcel fermented on its own in open vessels and concrete vats with gentle daily pumpovers, and the wine matured nine months mostly in French barriques with a tenth new, some components held in concrete.

Plush and immediate, dark and red berries with violet, tobacco leaf and soft, fine tannin. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Lamb koftas, roast duck or a good burger; this is the Cabernet in the range made for drinking now, not for the cellar.
