Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2018

Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot is a Margaret River red blend from the estate's second label.

A second label exists to be drunk young, and this one takes its fruit from coastal blocks in the Wallcliffe subregion, mainly North Block and Weightmans. The blend runs 69 per cent Cabernet, 28 per cent Merlot and 4 per cent Petit Verdot. Whole-berry fermentation accounts for the soft core, and twelve months across new, two-year and three-year seasoned oak keeps the tannins fine. Voyager Estate dates to 1978 and sits on gravel close enough to the Indian Ocean that the label's name, lifted from the national anthem, is more or less literal.

Blackcurrant and violet lead, the middle is smooth and the tannins close fine and dry. Serve at 16-17 degrees. Pizza with fennel sausage, a Sunday roast, or steak and chips are all in range, and it will not mind a slight chill on a warm evening.
