Voyager Estate MJW Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Voyager Estate MJW Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's flagship Margaret River Cabernet.

The initials belong to Michael J. Wright, the mining engineer who bought this Margaret River property in 1991 and set about rebuilding it, and the wine that carries them comes from two blocks only. The Old Block was planted in 1978, Block 12 on the North vineyard in 1995, both to the Houghton clone, both on stony gravel over stone and clay. Picking was done by hand between 5 and 7 April. Fruit was destemmed with as many berries left whole as possible, each parcel fermented on its own in open vats with gentle pump-overs, then pressed to barrel, 46 per cent of it new, for eighteen months.

Cassis, cedar and dried herb, with tannins that are firm, long and finely powdered. Give it an hour in a decanter and serve at 17-18 degrees. Roast lamb, aged rib-eye or a hard washed-rind cheese will meet it properly, and it will also reward a decade in the cellar.
