Voyager Estate MJW Chardonnay 2019

Voyager Estate MJW Chardonnay is the estate's top white, grown in Margaret River.

Two blocks in the organically farmed Broadvale vineyard supply the fruit: Block 5 to the Gingin clone and Block 6 to Clone 95. Gravel with a high granite component sits over a stony clay base here, which suits a variety that needs restraining. The 2019 season came in unusually cool and late, and the slow ripening gave flavour time to build while natural acidity stayed intact. Both parcels were hand-picked, chilled overnight, whole-bunch pressed and left to ferment on wild yeast, with the Block 6 portion taken through full malolactic conversion for structure. Monthly lees stirring ran across eleven months in French oak, 40 per cent new.

White peach and lemon oil with a nutty, savoury undertow and real drive through the finish. Serve at 12 degrees, not colder. It stands up to roast chicken with bread sauce, lobster, or a slab of Gruyere, and will keep developing for a decade.
