Voyager Estate MJW Chardonnay 2021

Voyager Estate MJW Chardonnay is a single-vineyard Margaret River white made only in the better seasons.

Low yields meant nothing at all was bottled under this label in 2020, so this release picks the thread back up with three organic Broadvale blocks: Block 5 planted to Gingin, Block 6 to Clone 95 and V12 to Dijon 76, all on granite over stony clay. Cold, wet weather in November upset fruit set and cut the crop again, but what survived the long, cool season arrived clean and bright. Each parcel was hand-picked and handled separately, fermenting spontaneously in barrels of French oak; of the three, only the Clone 95 batch went through malolactic conversion. Barrels were stirred across nine months, blended in November and bottled in January 2022.

Aromatically it runs to citrus blossom and white nectarine, with a taut, chalky palate and a long saline close. Twelve degrees. Serve it with abalone, chicken poached in stock, or a soft goat's cheese, and give the glass a little room.
