Voyager Estate Museum Chardonnay 2020

Voyager Estate Museum Chardonnay is an organically grown white from Margaret River, released with cellar age.

Stevens Valley, in the Wallcliffe subregion, is arguably the finest white-wine address in Margaret River: gravel over clay, and ocean air that keeps the nights cool. Six blocks across four clones go into this wine, Gingin for power and concentration, Dijon 95, 96 and 76 for finesse, texture and freshness. Apart from a brief October hailstorm the 2020 season ran close to ideal, with a hot December giving way to a milder January. The whites came in first, from early February. Fruit was hand-picked, chilled overnight, whole-bunch pressed and fermented on wild yeast in French oak, 36 per cent new and 38 per cent one year old, with selected parcels through malolactic. Nine months on lees followed.

Grapefruit zest and lemon meringue give way to butterscotch and toast, and the finish is chalky and dry. Serve at 12 degrees. Pair it with crayfish, a chicken pie or a wedge of Gruyere. There is another decade or more in it if you can wait.
