Voyager Estate Shiraz 2021

Voyager Estate Shiraz is a medium-bodied red grown on the estate's stoniest ground in Margaret River.

This is a vigorous variety, and the way to rein it in here is to plant it on rock. The four blocks behind the wine sit on the toughest, most gravelly soils the estate owns, which holds yields down and concentration up. Hand-picking happened in mid-March. Fruit was destemmed but not crushed and fermented cool, as whole berries, in concrete and in small open-top steel vessels, hand-plunged and pumped over twice a day. Eleven months in oak followed, a third of it new, and the parcels were blended before bottling. The 2021 vintage was cool and long, which suits this style well.

Blue fruit and black cherry, cracked pepper, and a fine graphite grip through the finish. Serve at 16-17 degrees. Pair it with Middle Eastern lamb, char-grilled quail, or eggplant baked with tomato and ricotta. A few years in the cellar will do it no harm.
