Description
Weinbach's Altenbourg Gewürztraminer comes from a limestone site directly beneath the Grand Cru Furstentum.
The Altenbourg lies at Kientzheim, immediately below Furstentum, and shares its geology of limestone, clay and some sand; the quality of its wines makes a reasonable case for grand cru status of its own. Domaine Weinbach, farmed biodynamically by the Faller family, bottles several wines from the site, including late-harvest Pinot Gris and this Gewürztraminer, which tends to be drier and more savoury than the Furstentum version. The wine was raised for ten months and finished with 25 g/L residual sugar, a level that reads as gently off-dry against the variety's natural weight. The house style is evident in the way the taut acidity and mineral line hold the wine's intensity in shape rather than letting it turn heavy, which is the usual failing of the grape.
Good now and for ten years or more; serve at 10–12°C as an aperitif, or with roast duck, five-spice pork or Indian dishes.
