Description

Weinbach Alsace Altenbourg Pinot Noir is a biodynamically grown Alsace red from limestone soils, planted with mass selections taken from the Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard.

Altenbourg lies east of the Schlossberg grand cru and just below Furstentum, on limestone with rich clays, and it is warm enough to ripen Pinot Noir properly in a region long dominated by white varieties. Domaine Weinbach farms it biodynamically, at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare, using cuttings sourced from the Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard rather than commercial clones. Eddy Faller describes the Altenbourg wine as having a velvetier structure than the Pinot Noir grown on Schlossberg granite. Winemaking is kept almost identical across the two bottlings so that the difference between them is a matter of site: a ten-day cold soak, up to two weeks on skins, partial whole-bunch fermentation and extended ageing in predominantly old oak, with new wood kept to a minimum.

Drinking well from release and worth five to eight years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, coq au Riesling or mushroom tart.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
