Weinbach Alsace Altenbourg Riesling 2023

Weinbach Alsace Altenbourg Riesling is a dry, biodynamically farmed Riesling from a limestone site more usually given over to Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris.

The Altenbourg vineyard sits east of Schlossberg and directly below the Furstentum grand cru, on limestone with rich clays. Those soils suit the aromatic varieties, and most of the vineyard is planted to Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat, but Domaine Weinbach also holds several plots of Riesling there. Historically the site's Riesling leaned towards sweeter styles, since the fruit ripened readily and the domaine finished the wines with residual sugar. Warmer, drier seasons have allowed the Fallers to change tack and ferment it dry, and this is only the third vintage in that mould. Farming is biodynamic, as it is across the estate. Compared with the Riesling the domaine grows on the granite of Schlossberg, the Altenbourg version tends to be more floral and chalkier in shape, with the limestone showing in the finish.

Good on release and likely to gain over five to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled snapper, chicken with lemon or a plate of oysters.
