Description
Weinbach's Clos des Capucins Pinot Gris is a dry Alsace white from old vines in the walled vineyard around the domaine.
The Clos des Capucins is the five-hectare walled vineyard at Kientzheim that the Faller family have farmed since 1898 and that gives the domaine its address. The estate is certified biodynamic and the clos supplies the fruit for the house's estate-labelled wines, of which this is the Pinot Gris. Grapes are pressed as whole bunches, fermented to complete dryness and raised for ten months in large oak ovals, vessels that add texture rather than oak character. The result is a version of the variety with weight and layered orchard fruit but no residual sugar, which is a deliberate departure from the richer, off-dry style that Alsace Pinot Gris often takes. Eddy Faller recommends it with grilled salmon and mushroom risotto.
Ready on release and good for five to eight years; serve at 10–12°C with pan-fried white fish, roast pork or mildly spiced Asian dishes.
