Description
Weinbach's Clos des Capucins Pinot Noir is an Alsace red from the walled vineyard that surrounds the domaine at Kaysersberg, farmed biodynamically.
Alsace Pinot Noir has changed sharply over the past decade, and Weinbach now bottles five single-vineyard examples. Clos des Capucins is the walled site around the house itself, and this is the earlier-drinking wine of the group, pitched at roughly the level of village Burgundy. Stylistically it can resemble the high-grown Pinots of the Jura, or the best German examples, as much as anything from the Côte d'Or. The estate has worked biodynamically for many years. The fruit fermented spontaneously with 20 per cent whole bunches and spent about 20 days on skins, then went into mature Burgundy barrels for 14 months before bottling unfiltered. The result has subtle tannins, a refreshing texture and a mouth-watering, powdery close, and it stands as a genuine alternative to Burgundy rather than an imitation of it.
Drinking now and good for five or six years. Serve at around 16°C with roast duck, mushroom dishes or a charcuterie plate.
