Description
The Clos des Capucins Pinot Noir is the most approachable of Weinbach's five single-vineyard reds, from the walled home vineyard at Kaysersberg.
Alsace has grown Pinot Noir for centuries, but only in the past two decades has it been taken seriously as a red-wine region, and Weinbach has been part of that shift; the standard of the domaine's Pinot has risen sharply and there are now five single-vineyard bottlings. The Clos des Capucins is the walled property at the heart of the estate, once held by Capuchin friars, and it is farmed biodynamically. This cuvée is pitched towards earlier drinking, with a quality level comparable to village wines in Burgundy, though stylistically it can resemble the high-grown Pinots of the Jura or the better German examples as much as those of the Côte d'Or. The fruit fermented spontaneously with 20 per cent whole bunches and spent about twenty days on skins, then aged fourteen months in mature Burgundy barrels before bottling without filtration.
Drinking well now and good for five to eight years. Serve at 16°C with roast duck, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
