Weinbach Alsace Colette Riesling 2023

Cuvée Colette is Domaine Weinbach's dry Riesling from the lower, sandier soils of the Schlossberg slope, named for Colette Faller.

Weinbach sits below the Schlossberg at Kientzheim, in a former Capuchin monastery whose walled Clos des Capucins gives the domaine its heart. Colette Faller, who died in early 2015, was largely responsible for the estate's modern reputation, and like her daughter Laurence and her husband Théo she is remembered with a wine that carries her name. The fruit comes from 50- to 60-year-old vines in the Bonnes Terres terroir, further down the Schlossberg hillside where the soils are deeper and sandier than the granite above. Picking here tends to come a little later, which gives a fuller register of flavour, running from white flowers to mirabelle and citrus zest. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and the wine is made dry.

Drink now or over the next decade, with Alsatian charcuterie, roast pork or a Vietnamese salad, at 10 to 12°C.
