Weinbach Alsace Cuvée Colette Riesling 2020

Cuvée Colette is Domaine Weinbach's dry Riesling from the lower, sandier reaches of the Schlossberg slope, named for the late Colette Faller.

Weinbach is based at the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg, a walled property once held by Capuchin friars and in Faller hands since 1898. Colette Faller, who died in early 2015, did as much as anyone to shape the estate's modern reputation, and this cuvée carries her name as other wines carry those of her daughter Laurence and her husband Théo. The fruit comes from 45-year-old vines set lower on the Schlossberg hill, where the soils are deeper and sandier than on the granite heights and the picking is later. Some of these rows fall just outside the Grand Cru boundary, which is the only reason the wine cannot be labelled as such; the domaine has applied for Premier Cru status. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and winemaking follows the house pattern of whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation and ageing in old casks without new oak.

Drinking well now and capable of a decade or more. Serve at 10 to 12°C with roast pork, smoked trout or a plate of Munster.
