Weinbach Alsace Cuvée Sainte Catherine Pinot Gris 2020

Weinbach's Cuvée Sainte Catherine Pinot Gris comes from the Clos des Capucins, the walled vineyard that surrounds the domaine's house at Kaysersberg.

Domaine Weinbach takes its name from the stream running through the Clos des Capucins, a walled site held by Capuchin friars from 1612 and bought by the Faller brothers in 1898. Théo Faller expanded the holdings considerably; after his death in 1979 his wife Colette and daughters Catherine and Laurence carried the estate on, and since 2016 Catherine has led it with her sons Eddy and Théo. The domaine now farms twenty-nine hectares in the Kaysersberg valley, took up biodynamics in 1998 and completed conversion in 2005, with Demeter certification. The Clos itself is an early-ripening site of sand and silt over granite pebbles, ground that keeps more definition in Pinot Gris than the variety often shows. Fruit is pressed slowly in whole bunches, fermented on natural yeasts and raised in old foudres of 1,500 to 6,000 litres; no new oak is used anywhere in the cellar.

Drink over the next eight years or so. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, smoked fish or a mushroom and onion tart.
