Description
Cuvée Théo is Weinbach's Riesling from the Clos des Capucins alone, the walled monopole at the foot of the Schlossberg, farmed biodynamically.
The Clos des Capucins takes its name from the Capuchin friars who arrived in the area in 1619 and is the walled vineyard that surrounds the Weinbach house at Kaysersberg. Enclosed by its own walls and sheltered by the hills around it, the Clos sits on sand, alluvial pebbles and granitic gravel rather than the harder granite of the Schlossberg above. Those lighter soils, together with consistently low cropping, give a Riesling that is supple and pithy and unusually approachable in its youth, in contrast to the tauter grand cru bottlings. As with all Weinbach Rieslings, the fruit was whole-cluster pressed, fermented without any yeast additions and matured in very old oak casks for ten months, so the wood plays a structural rather than a flavouring role.
Drinking well on release and good for five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a bowl of pho.
