Weinbach Alsace Gewürztraminer 2016

Domaine Weinbach's Alsace Gewürztraminer is the varietal bottling of a certified biodynamic estate based in the walled Clos des Capucins below the Schlossberg at Kaysersberg.

Alsace lies in the rain shadow of the Vosges, which keeps it among the driest vineyard areas in France and lets Gewürztraminer ripen fully while holding its aromatic definition. The domaine was laid out by Capuchin monks in 1612 around a clos that had been vineyard since the ninth century, and two Faller brothers bought it in 1898. Théo Faller made its modern reputation; his daughter Cathy runs it now with her sons Eddy and Théo. Twenty-nine hectares in the Kaysersberg valley take in ten on the granite of the Schlossberg, the marl and limestone of Furstentum, Mambourg and Marckrain, the limestone, clay and sand of the Altenbourg, and the Clos itself on sand and silt over granite pebbles. The vines have been farmed organically for two decades and biodynamically since 1998, with certification from 2005. Pressing is slow and whole-bunch, fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts, and ageing is in foudres of 1,500 to 6,000 litres with no new oak.

It will drink well over the next several years. Serve at 10-12°C with Munster, a mild curry or duck with spiced fruit.
