Description
Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Pinots is a co-fermented field blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois from a single grand cru.
Furstentum is a grand cru on the steep, limestone-rich slopes above Kientzheim and Sigolsheim, a warm, well-drained site best known for Riesling and Gewürztraminer but capable of giving the Pinot family unusual depth. Domaine Weinbach, the Faller family estate based at the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg, is in conversion to biodynamics. This cuvée is roughly 60 per cent Pinot Gris, with the balance drawn from an adjoining block planted as a field blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois. The vines are around forty years old. Because the quantity is small, all the grapes are co-fermented rather than vinified separately, and the wine is aged for fourteen months in barrels smaller than the estate normally uses. The combination of grand cru site, old vines and a single shared ferment gives a broad, textured white with the weight of Pinot Gris and the freshness the other two varieties bring.
Drink over the next eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, smoked trout or a mushroom tart.
