Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Mambourg La Butte du Calvaire Riesling 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Mambourg La Butte du Calvaire Riesling is a rare parcel of Riesling in a grand cru dominated by Gewurztraminer, bottled only in magnum and in tiny quantity.

Mambourg, above Sigolsheim, is one of the warmest of the Alsace grands crus, a long south-facing limestone ridge that has historically been given over to Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Domaine Weinbach, the Faller family estate at Kaysersberg, gained a foothold here through the 2019 purchase of six hectares formerly belonging to Domaine Gérard Fuchs, and among those vines was a small plot of Riesling at the south-eastern tip of the cru, ringed by trees. The soils are rocky, over calcareous bedrock. The estate is farmed biodynamically. Eddy Faller reports that these old, low-yielding vines give a wine that marries powerful aromatic expression with generous structure, and he recommends several years of further cellaring before opening. Only three magnums were made available for this market.

Worth cellaring five to ten years, and likely longer. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork belly, choucroute garnie or grilled marron.
